Abu Dhabi Strengthens Healthcare Oversight with Expanded Audits and Community Engagement in 2025 iamge

The Department of Health – Abu Dhabi (DoH) has announced the results of its comprehensive inspection and audit activities for 2025, highlighting a significant expansion in regulatory oversight across the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. The findings reflect the Department’s ongoing commitment to safeguarding public health, enhancing service quality, and ensuring that healthcare providers adhere to the highest standards of safety and patient care.

According to the report, the Department conducted a total of 4,540 licensing audit rounds throughout 2025, covering a wide spectrum of healthcare facilities, including hospitals, clinics, and home healthcare providers. In addition, compliance audit rounds saw a remarkable increase of 31 percent, rising from 2,401 in 2024 to 3,485 in 2025. This growth demonstrates a clear shift toward more proactive monitoring and early identification of areas requiring improvement within the healthcare sector.

A major milestone achieved during this period was the successful completion of 100 percent audit coverage of all home healthcare providers. This achievement underscores the Department’s efforts to ensure that quality care is consistently delivered across all healthcare settings, not only within traditional facilities but also in home-based care environments where patient safety remains equally critical.

The Department also implemented targeted oversight campaigns focusing on key areas such as medication prescription and dispensing safety, laboratory operations, operational compliance requirements, and healthcare sector Emiratisation initiatives. These campaigns were designed to address high-priority risks and reinforce adherence to established regulatory standards. The majority of healthcare facilities demonstrated strong compliance, particularly in maintaining safe service delivery practices and consistent operational controls.

However, the audits did identify certain areas that require further attention. In particular, some small and medium-sized laboratories were found to have gaps in compliance, prompting the initiation of corrective quality improvement plans. Similarly, Emiratisation audits highlighted the need for continued efforts to enhance workforce nationalisation within the healthcare sector, with authorities emphasizing the importance of sustained collaboration to achieve these goals.Commenting on the results, Dr. Noura Al Ghaithi stated that the Department’s audit and oversight activities reflect an evolving healthcare system built on transparency, monitoring, and shared accountability. She emphasized that the ultimate goal is to ensure every member of the community receives safe and high-quality care, while strengthening trust between healthcare providers and the public.

Community engagement played a crucial role in shaping healthcare improvements throughout the year. The Department recorded 1,831 Customer Relationship Management cases, achieving an impressive closure rate of 98 percent. This demonstrates the Department’s commitment to addressing public concerns efficiently and maintaining open communication channels with residents. The ‘Voice of the Community’ initiative further supports this approach by enabling individuals to share feedback, raise concerns, and contribute to the continuous improvement of healthcare services. In terms of enforcement, the Department issued 223 violations related to licensing, operational compliance, quality standards, and patient-centered service delivery. These violations resulted in the closure of seven healthcare facilities, highlighting the regulator’s firm stance on maintaining strict compliance and ensuring patient safety across the sector.

Dr. Fayeza Al Yafei noted that the results from 2025 demonstrate measurable progress across healthcare facilities in the Emirate. She reiterated the Department’s commitment to continuous improvement, emphasizing that maintaining high-quality services under stringent safety standards remains a top priority. To further strengthen the regulatory framework, the Department continued to introduce and update standards throughout the year. One of the key developments was the implementation of the Medical Waste Management Standard, aimed at ensuring safe disposal practices and promoting environmental sustainability across healthcare facilities.

The Department has urged healthcare providers to maintain strict compliance with all regulatory standards while encouraging community members to actively participate in feedback initiatives. Officials stressed that collaboration between regulators, healthcare providers, and the community is essential for building a resilient and future-ready healthcare system.

In conclusion, the 2025 audit results released by the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi reflect a year of significant progress in strengthening healthcare regulation and improving patient safety across Abu Dhabi. Through expanded audits, targeted oversight campaigns, and strong community engagement, the Department continues to set high standards for healthcare excellence, reinforcing Abu Dhabi’s position as a leader in healthcare governance within the UAE.
